Chapter Twenty-Seven

Alex and Evelyn created an uproar as they ran through the dance, Caitlin lying unconscious in Alex’s arms. There were screams. The cafeteria glowed red—the emergency lights were on.

“Get out of the way!” Alex cried. “Move!”

The overhead lights flickered back on. Chaperones were staring in horror. Detective Penn pushed through the crowd, and pulled Alex and Evelyn into the front office. The detective immediately spoke into a radio. “I need an ambulance and backup units.”

She put down the radio and knelt beside Caitlin, whom Alex had just laid on the carpeted floor. “Narcan!” Penn yelled to anyone who was listening. “Does the school have Narcan?”

“They think she’s overdosed,” Alex murmured to Evelyn. And maybe they were right. Despite all her suspicions, Evelyn had no clue what had made Caitlin react this way.

More school officials came running, and Alex and Evelyn were shunted off to one side. Within minutes, a paramedics team had arrived.

Detective Penn walked over. “You two, follow me.”

She led them down a hallway. As they walked, the detective made a call on her cell phone. Evelyn could hear the other line ringing, and then a voicemail picked up.

“Tyson, where the hell are you?” Penn said.

She hung up and gestured at an open doorway. The Vice Principal’s office. “Why do bad things always seem to happen when Alex Evans or Evelyn Ashwood are around? Notebooks go missing, people go missing, people get hurt?”

“That’s not—” Evelyn began.

Penn held up a hand. “Save it. I need to head to the hospital. I have another officer coming to babysit you two. Don’t move until Tyson gets here. You’re going to tell him everything.”
